Our Approach
History and faith ask different questions. We stick to the historical ones.
We're here to share what academic study has learned about Jesus of Nazareth. We aren't here to argue anyone into or out of a belief.
What History Can and Can't Do
Historians weigh surviving evidence and say what probably happened. They can't rule on what an event means, or on questions of faith. When an article reaches that limit, it says so.
How We Mark Certainty
Every article shows where specialists stand on its main claims, using one scale.
- Broad consensus
- Accepted by nearly all specialists, whatever their beliefs.
- Majority view
- Held by most specialists, with serious dissent.
- Actively debated
- Specialists are divided, and the evidence can be read more than one way.
- Minority view
- Argued by a few specialists, and not accepted by most.
Respect for Every Reader
We describe each tradition in terms its own members would recognize, and we don't treat any of them as an obstacle to be overcome.
